Subaru is the automobile manufacturing division of Japanese transportation conglomerate Subaru Corporation, the twenty-first largest automaker by production worldwide in 2017. Subaru cars are known for their use of a boxer engine layout in most vehicles above 1500 cc.

The 2021 Subaru Ascent stands out in showrooms as the brand's largest model, but in the American car market it's overshadowed by a plethora of other popular three-row crossovers. Folks who appreciate Subaru's wholesome image and ubiquitous all-wheel-drive system will find something to like here: its versatile seating configurations and seven- or eight-person capacities are perfect for families. Every model has driver aids including adaptive cruise, automated emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. The big Subie's main drawbacks are its noisy engine, apathetic passing power, and uninspiring driving behavior. Our long-term example has shown us how useful it is for shuttling people and stuff, but also how annoying the beeps and chimes from its driver-assist systems can be if they're not disabled.

Product Reviews:

My wife and I bought a brand new Subaru Forrester, our second one. Had no complaints with the first one 250,000 miles. The new one is a complete **. Around 30k miles started burning oil at the rate of about a quart every 2k miles, we jumped through all their hoops and did their ridiculous oil consumption test. We were treated like morons, told this is acceptable with a boxer engine which is ridiculous! My boss owns a Porsche which also has a boxer engine and doesn't burn a drop. Anyways they finally admitted there was a defect and replaced the top end (short block). Now with less than 20k since the replacement having the same issues, wife went back to dealer today! It's a shame because we really loved the first one but at this point no matter what they do, we will NEVER, EVER, own another Subaru!!!

I had a 5 year old Legacy Outback with just over 60k miles, very well maintained. The transmission broke down completely while I was on vacation and it took over a week to fix and cost $3k. Absolutely no help from Subaru on this, even though that year and model had a history of tranny problems. My wife also had catastrophic transmission problems with her Subaru. Needless to say, we got rid of the Subarus and have enjoyed total satisfaction with our Honda, Toyota, and Lexus vehicles. Beware the dreaded Subaru transmission!

I read about the Imprezza in Consumer Reports as it was their top car of the year 2016. It is an average car. It drove nice and at the time I was looking for an inexpensive car. I've had it for 2 years with some minor problems and I will be looking for a better car this year. It doesn't have all the features I would have liked and can't expect more. I also had a poor experience with the dealership. Also, I don't like that when I unlock the car it only unlocks the driver side door. I saw in an ad that they changed this for the next model year and you can now program it to unlock whatever doors you want. Lastly, I don't like that it doesn't have rain sensing windshield wipers.

I have a 2011 Subaru 2.5X 4 cylinder automatic transmission EPA 21/27. On a cold start up, my 2011 Forester engine made a loud knocking noise, similar to a spun rod bearing. The dealer says, all Forester engines are noisy. This is not a normal noise for any engine. The fuel mileage is also deplorable 25 highway on cruise. In th county/suburb 18-22. I don't drive in the city, normally. My last Subaru had no engine noise, even at 200,000 miles, and got great fuel mileage, 4-5 above EPA rating. I returned to dealer shop 3 times. There is nothing wrong with it, according to them. Foresters do not get better than 25mpg, and all are noisy. I contacted the Subaru customer service online. They talked to the dealer, but have not helped fix the problem at all. It's basically a waste of time. It currently has 9,000 miles. I purchased this new at the Richmond Subaru/Moore Cadillac.

The ECO system on my 2015 Legacy isn't working properly. I have been to their shop several times and phoned several other times. Have received 5 different explanation how it works and none matched the handbook. Finally a man spoke with me, the foremen I think, he told me they could not fix it and could not or would not replace it. I BOUGHT THE CAR IN Oct 2014. EVEN NOW I only have just over 14000 miles on it. This has been going on since the first week of May. I know it has nothing to do with the drivability of the vehicle but it's on there and I paid for it so it should work. I received no paperwork as they only drove it and turned the system on an off

I bought my new 2014 Subaru Crosstrek and it had steering and handling issues. Two trips to the dealer where I bought the car no troubles found. Feels "like a new Crosstrek." Tried a different dealer service center. Test drive can not reproduce problem. At 11000 miles I had my local alignment shop check it and the alignment was out and one tire was not true. That tire is now on the back and can no longer be rotated. Top it all off, I find out dealer service centers are not required to have wheel alignment equipment by Subaru of America. This is my 3rd Subaru and the first 2 were great cars. This one feels cheap. Has rattles and the overall quality has gone way down in 10 years. The car sure doesn't feel "planted" like it has all wheel drive. Buyers, if you're looking at this car stay away from internet chat rooms forums because you will get nothing but sales people telling lies about how good their cars and the company are. Judging by the complaints here I'm not the only person.

My 2013 Subaru Outback needs the transmission replace at Subaru's expense. All I'm getting is comments that because there are so many vehicles with this problem they do not have enough transmissions to fix the problem. At first we were told it would be 7-10 days for the necessary parts. Then we were told it would be 4-5 weeks. We have surpassed that time frame with no idea when my car will be fixed. I am not able to use it as I need. This is totally unacceptable. Pressure from various agencies needs to happen now.

I purchased my 2008 Subaru Legacy in 2016 and absolutely love the car. I have never had a better car but when the airbag recall took effect that's when I found out the recall on the dashboard for melting and causing the reaction of not being able to see when the sun was shining on it. So when I called to get the dash done under the warranty they would not honor it. I just recommend when you do buy a Subaru make sure to actively check for recalls because on the airbag recall I have received over 100 notices but none for the dash. Thanks.

I love my 2013 Subaru Impreza and had no issues up to now. I know I'm part of a class action suit, and I reviewed it and saw it was not only for oil issues but also for CVT transmission problems. My car is 62,000 and I've done all of the services. After my 60,000 check up, where everything checked out fine, I heard an odd grumbling noise and was told I needed a new transmission, which luckily is still under warranty. However, there are simply no parts available in all the USA and it could take weeks or months due to back order. I was told it was "safe" to drive, but I live alone and drive country roads and was told it could stop at some point. To me that's not safe. I find it unacceptable that a car so popular should have such a serious issue. I've been in touch with the customer service hotline and someone keeps promising me he'll try to expedite getting the part, but there's been no action. I can't even get a "guesstimate." I've been offered $500 for a rental car, but that's only 10 days and that will not even begin to cover that it could take "weeks." So, it's worthless right now until I can even get an estimated arrival date. I'm beginning to think I need to trade in the car, but after this, not sure I want another Subaru. Buying a new car is hard work and I'm not in the mood for all of that. I don't like driving around with a faulty major part of the car. I'm disgusted and angry. I'm going to write a letter to the Chief Operating Officer at their headquarters to see if I can get some action.

My recent experience. Went to local tire center to replace tires. During process tire pressure sensor was damaged and required replacing which tire center did. However after several attempts the warning light would not extinguish. Tire center was told new sensor has to be recalibrated/registered with Subaru costing $160 and requiring the vehicle to be booked into their service center (more than 2 weeks wait) to be corrected. If you want the convenience of choosing how much and who services and repairs your vehicle without being held to ransom this may not be the company for you.
