The Car Keeps Overheating
Surprisingly, overheating doesn’t happen that often especially in modern cars with their complex systems, sensors, and so on acting to keep the vehicle’s temperature just right. Making sure the radiator is looked after and the water pump is working is the easiest and cheapest way to prevent problems with overheating.
Whatever car you own will require regular maintenance and even then you will still get things that go wrong from time to time. Some car models are more prone to certain issues than others and driving style can also have some impact on efficiency. No matter what your vehicle, we hope that you have found this list helpful. Staying vigilant for signs of trouble and dealing with them when they occur saves time and money and keeps you on the road.

The Transmission Fluid is Leaking
Any transmission system needs fluid to make sure all of the working components are kept well lubricated. In automatic cars, the fluid used in transmission is also used in the hydraulic and coolant systems. Small holes can form throughout the system which allows tiny amounts of fluid to leak. Over time, or if the leaks are severe, you will find that transmission is less efficient, plus you may find that the system overheats or loses pressure. In both cases, the transmission will fail. If you see a red puddle collecting under your car it can be a sign that the transmission pan is cracked.

The Car is Consuming Too Much Oil
Fresh oil is essential for a car to function but if you are constantly topping up your oil level you may have a problem with the car. If you start to notice a drop-off in performance or the oil light comes on you will definitely need to check the oil. If you don’t get the oil changed regularly you might find that the engine becomes corroded. Poor quality oil or lack of regular changes can also cause blockages in the oil filter. It is best to change the oil filter at the same time as you change the oil although some modern cars do have a filter bypass system in place.

Dead Battery
Most car batteries should last about three years or 50,000 miles. A dead battery is usually caused by reduced amps – or electrical currents – which naturally decrease as the battery loses its ability to maintain a charge. A damaged alternator, battery temperature sensor, or other charging system components can expedite this issue. It’s best to replace your car battery every 50,000 miles or three years, even if it’s not showing signs of damage.

Broken Starter Motor
The starter motor is responsible for cranking your engine over, which begins the starting process. When this component fails, it’s usually because the electrical solenoid has been damaged, the starter motor breaks or another electrical fault occurs – like a starter relay, for example. While a starter can be replaced before it breaks, it’s difficult to predict when this will happen. It’s best to have a car-starting inspection to determine the problem before assuming it's the starter.

The Radiator is Leaking
Radiator leaks are almost always caused by corrosion. Corrosion itself can have a lot of causes but once you get one leak you are likely to get more so it makes sense to replace the whole radiator. If you don’t keep the radiator in good condition you can get problems with overheating and, ultimately, could end up with an engine fire.

Alternator Failure
The alternator is the part of your vehicle that keeps all electrical systems running once the car starts. It’s also responsible for supplying a charge to your battery to keep it in peak condition. When an alternator breaks, it will eventually cause the battery to wear out prematurely and other starting issues. Check your recommended service intervals and replace the alternator before it breaks to avoid this hassle.

Steering Wheel Shaking
Multiple issues can cause the steering wheel to shake while driving. If it happens right after starting your car and beginning to drive, wheel bearings or damaged suspension components are often the sources. If it happens at higher speeds, it’s typically a tire/wheel balance issue. Regardless, having a professional mechanic inspect the vehicle at your location is the best way to correctly diagnose and resolve this issue.

I recently was involved in a vehicular accident with my 2006 Saturn Ion3. Although I was traveling at approximately 40 mph when I crashed into another vehicle, the airbag didnt deploy. By the airbag not deploying, On Star wasnt notified of the crash. Since OnStar is their premiere system, it might be good if the very thing that will get help, actually works. My car was totaled, and they dont make Saturns anymore, but maybe somebody might want to check out the airbag on these vehicles to make sure they actually work. Mine didnt.

We purchased our used 2007 Saturn Outlook in May 2009. The vehicle had its first leak in March 2010. We took the vehicle back to our original dealer, and they stated the original TSB/Recall worth that was done, did not get done appropriately. They redid the work. My vehicle has leaked 8 more times, and the new dealership (original Saturn closed) cannot locate the leak. I have a case with GM, and I am getting nowhere. GM does not appear to be taking any responsibility for their faulty vehicle. There are numerous complaints about this same issue online (i.e. **). I have documented every conversation/appointment I have had regarding this issue. My headliner and carpet are both ruined from all the rain that has soaked in. When it gets warm outside, my vehicle smells terribly. Im concerned about the potential health effects this may have on my family, if there is mold/mildew growing in the vehicle. I am also concerned about the probability of mechanical things malfunctioning, due to the rain getting it wet. I am disgusted with GM, and the way they are handling all of the leak issues with the many Outlooks produced. There should have been a recall placed on all of them way back when. I am disgusted.

I have had my 2007 Saturn Ion for 1.5 years. It only have 30K miles on it. I have had to replace the ignition key holder thing because the key got stuck in the ignition and the car couldnt turn off. Now, Im starting to have power steering issues. The power steering was shut off on two separate occasions while driving. The ignition system put me back $750. Luckily both times I wasnt on the open road when the power steering shut off (residential area the 1st time, parking lot the second time), so I was able to maneuver to a stop. Turning the car off and back on made the steering come back...but for how long? I doubt Ill be lucky everytime. Guess I better keep lifting weights until I can get this fixed.

We purchased a 2008 Saturn with 76,000 miles. In May 2014 we begin having transmission problems. Upon researching the net we discovered other owners having problems and GMC doing a recall. I begin correspondence and after eight months and numerous e-mails and recall letters we were told that due to the 19,000 mile over their criteria of 120,000 we were out of luck. But to show their goodwill they decided to give us a $2,000 dollar credit toward a NEW 2015 GMC. But not a credit toward having this piece of Saturn repaired at a cost of $4,000.00. per Jim **.

The anti-sway bar of my 2006 Saturn Vue snapped when making a right-hand turn at normal driving speed. The Vue was taken to the local Chevy dealership. The vehicle spent 21 days in the shop because they were unable to locate a new part. The dealership found a used part and charged the new part price. Six days later, this same part broke again, this time making a left-hand turn into my driveway. The vehicle is again in the shop.

When it is raining, the dash lights begin to flicker. This would lead you to believe that there is some kind of short in the wiring caused by the higher humidity; but to this day no one has been able to fix it. Any ideas?

Just got my 2003 Saturn l300 two years ago at a dealership used. Started having trouble when the battery needed changed. The horn/door locks quit working then it kept getting stuck in park. Intermittent problems for months. Not having the money to fix this problem I decided to look online for answers. And from everything I have read and learned my problem is the (bcm) or body control module. What irritates me is that the only way to fix this issue is to take to a dealership to be replaced and reprogrammed as it costs from 700 to $900 dollars to be done! I still make payments on this piece of junk as I dont have credit for new cars. Im paying for a car to sit in my driveway and cause me stress! If this is such a common issue why hasnt this been put into a recall? Why should I pay for this junk!

I have a 2005 Saturn Ion that I bought with 37,000 miles on it. Whenever the temperature is below 30, my car starts when it wants to. When I turn the key in the ignition, my security system light just flashes and wont let me try and start my car again for 10 minutes while it resets itself. It takes anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes to get my car started. I have resorted to putting a bathroom heater inside my car on the driver side floor to warm up the ignition so it will start. I have dealt with this for 2 years and I am buying a new car in a couple of days, because I cant take getting stuck after work for 30 minutes because my security system thinks Im breaking into my car. Ill take the $3,000 loss on my car!

I have a 2005 Saturn Ion Quad Coupe. I had issues off and on for a couple years from miles 50,000 - 90,000. Currently at 105,000 miles and the last 15,000 miles, the ignition stops at ACC and is locked every single time I turn off the car. I wait and hope every time that my key will come out, but held hostage by the lockout until a miracle occurs and the ignition releases the key without rhyme or reason. Sometimes this takes 1 - 10 minutes. Makes it difficult to valet or go anywhere with friends!

Our key has been stuck in the ignition of our 2006 Saturn Ion for the last 4 days. Three days prior to that the dealer replaced a frozen air compressor and transmission line ($1400). About 45 minutes before the key got stuck with the engine running, the coolant light came on even though wed had an oil change two weeks prior. We were instructed to disconnect the battery, but that did not stop the engine from running. A neighbor came over and helped disconnect a fuse. I am leery about sinking more money in this vehicle. We have had the faulty power steering replaced and a crack in the nipple inside the gas tank. I believe these repairs are above and beyond usual repair and maintenance for a vehicle and feel theyre unjust.I know the VIN number on my car was the same as those recalled a few years ago, but because my vehicle was not initially sold in what the NTSB deemed a hot state, it was not eligible. Without doubt, the Mid-East now experiences the same extreme weather conditions as did the hot states and I am advocating that all Saturns built between 2005-2007 be recalled. Anyone else joining me?

I have a 2007 Saturn Ion and, like others on here, I have experienced my key getting stuck in the ignition. The only difference is this happened to me when I was on vacation and I have no idea where the nearest mechanic was. I contacted AAA and they tried to come out to help but were unsuccessful. They pointed me to a Sears mechanic in the area and the gentleman there was extremely helpful, but because I was on vacation and needed to have the car to get home, they were only able to offer a temporary fix for the problem, which was to unplug the battery and remove the fuse to force the car to shut off. They were able to remove the key though. I am very disappointed in Saturn and GM that they have neglected to recall this part and am surprised there are so many people out there that have had the same exact problem. Shame on you, GM.

I own a 2006 Saturn Ion 2, original owner. I will say I did not have any major issues with my car until I got home, tried to turn off my car when the ignition would not turn leaving the car running. After several attempts, the key just came out with the ignition still running. I realized nothing would work, so I stalled the car, unplugged the battery and had it towed to a Saturn dealership. They supposedly replaced my ignition for $480 plus $140 for the tow. They said its been a common problem with this year, make, model and mileage but they havent recalled it yet. I truly hope that if enough people complain about it, they will issue the recall and we can all get reimbursed for our hard-earned money.

For this past year, I have been battling with my 2004 Ion. First, it started with having a hard time starting in colder mornings. Then it took longer and longer to get it going. Finally, I took it in and spent $1,000 for a new timing belt and it was fine for a short while. I took it in again and spent another grand on a new ignition. Within 48 hours of that service, my key has gotten stuck in the ignition and would not allow the car to be turned off. I bought a new Saturn Ion l series and after 4 years, the key begins to stick in the ignition whenever I turn off the car. Regardless what I do it just did not release the key. Sometimes it releases it and then I would hope it doesnt happen but it did. After experiencing this more times than I can count, I drove to the dealer only to be told it would cost me 800+ dollars to get it fixed. I used my car to get to and from work and couldnt walk away. Thank God I had a credit card!!!! They fixed the problem and now years after, I have the same problem occurring again.I agree with many of the owners that GM should have a recall on these Saturns. I do not have any money to pay GM another 400 dollars for repairs that will fail again! In order to prevent the battery from running out, I disconnect the battery when I am at home or when go out. I bought my Ion with cash a year ago. The first time I drove it through the canyon, I tried using the cruise control. It took several attempts but eventually it set. Unfortunately hitting the brake or engaging the clutch did not disengage the cruise control. Turning it off also did nothing. The best I could do is put it in neutral and let the RPSMs scream until eventually the cruise control disengaged. After this, several times while driving in town, in the city, with the cruise control button switched off, my car would engage the cruise control and begin to accelerate and I was unable to disengage it again but managed to avoid any accidents. I finally disconnected the battery to erase the memory and clear out any previous cruise control settings. Still cannot find anyone that can solve this mystery. My current problem is this: I was on the freeway when my car began to squeal much like the sound of a belt. The motor ran ok and I actually made it home and the car cut out in the driveway and will not start. I turned the key and it makes a very bizarre sound I have never heard before. Anyone w/ anything?

I was driving my VUE on the feeder road of the freeway when I came to the stop sign and as I began to take off my engine just revved up and would not go. I put it in park and turned the car off and it started up fine but when I tried to put in drive it just wouldnt move. I then had it towed to a mechanic shop and they looked at it and said it needed a new transmission which would be about 5,000. I took it to several shops and they all basically said the same thing. I was told by this one shop here in Houston, TX that there was a lawsuit against GM and I would have to pay for the repairs upfront but that GM would reimburse me. So I did a little research and I have seen several blogs on this subject but I guess I didnt do enough. I paid the repair shop $4900.00 to fix the transmission and still it doesnt run right. I have had to take it back to them 2 times for them to fix the transmission. GM should pay for the repair costs and there shouldnt be a time limit when we could have filed a claim. Im sure there are more Saturn cars that will be having the same problem in the future and were going to be stuck paying more for repairs than the car is probably worth.

My mother, like most people who received a recall letter in the mail this past year and who also happens to be one of the fortunate ones that can live to tell this story took her 2005 Saturn Ion to Love Chevrolet to have it serviced due to the ignition switch recall. Mind you there had been no issues with the car prior to. Where some people might say Saturns were poorly made my mothers car was actually one of the good ones. I always felt safe in it and more than safe enough to have my 5 year old daughter in the car. Whats the motto? If it isnt broke, dont fix it? Well, to say the least the day after Love put a generic ignition switch into her Saturn Ion handed her a new set of keys and told her the car was more than safe to drive long distances it was being towed off the side of the road. Their claim? My mother needed a new starter, 2 coil replacements and a new module and that the timing of the repairs was coincidental with what took place. The dealership was quick to tell us how much it would cost to replace the parts and was even quicker to let us know they would not be paying for it. Coincidental? Really?? Strike one. Thanks, GM. A few days later a family friend and mechanic does some research online, finds a starter from another Saturn and installs the part himself hoping to save my mother some money. However he is unable to run a diagnostic on the module because there is a code to get into it and only GM knows this code. Does that even sound legal to anyone else? GM has a code on your car making it near impossible for you to send it to any other place to have it fixed?? Its brilliant and slimy all at the same time..more slimy than brilliant. Anyhow, once the starter has been replaced all is well for about 3 hours and then its back to the side of the road we go. However, this time weve noticed some things. The car has no power, almost as if the battery has been drained and there is a smell coming from the ignition switch like something has burned up. So, with better judgment my mother decides to have it towed to a very trusted shop out in town instead of back to the GM dealership. I myself am military and stationed in Norfolk, VA and I often times wait to have maintenance done on my own car until Im visiting my mother in SC at this very shop, that is how trusted they are to me and my family. They explain to my mother that it is her ignition switch which is burning up her starter and draining her battery and they will personally give GM a call to find out what can be done since they should replace their faulty part. Sounds about right to me! GMs rebuttal? The mechanics my mother chose are not certified GM mechanics, a diagnostic was done previously while the car was at GM and since then my mother has had multiple hands in the car which could have caused those failures. They cannot be held responsible and will not be held responsible. Once again, GM was prepared with the labor and parts quote. Strike two and three. Thanks again, GM. Now, tell me something. Even if we were willing to have GM fix this again the trust is now out the window and my mother would be afraid to drive her car anywhere much less with my 5 year old daughter in it. I believe they would quietly fix the ignition switch issue and tell her it was something completely different. Is GM secretly trying to make up all the money they lost in labor for these recalls by putting parts in to cars they know are not necessarily compatible in hopes that these codes will force people to come back and have to pay out of pocket expenses? I know that my mother would hate to have another car payment right now but I have a feeling that regardless of if we spend the money to fix this or not that is exactly where we will end up, in a Honda dealership. People, please pay attention to what is going on out there with this recall. I would hate for this to happen to anyone else or worse. Thanks for absolutely nothing GM.

2003 Saturn ION - good car at first, but ignition issues plagued me. The scariest and most annoying issue was the key could be removed at any time during driving and after no luck with lasting repairs, I simply kept a note in the car during service appointments (or for valet) to MAKE SURE KEY IS IN THE OFF POSITION BEFORE REMOVING, because I came out to a dead battery more than once. Such a waste of energy and a risk to my family. I no longer have this vehicle and Im thankful for that because it felt unsafe!

What about my Saturn that is a 2002 SL2? Fortunately, when I took out the key, it was in park while the motor continued to run. I also have trouble getting the ignition to unlock from the column either to put the key in to start and mostly to get it out of the switch. I have to use a screw driver to push a button so I can remove the key. The running of the car just started to happen but I have been dealing with the bad ignition problem for some time.

I bought a Saturn from a dealer who gave me an engine Warranty For Life. At 88,000 miles, while on a trip, my engine blew. I rented a car to finish our journey and returned. I was told at the dealer who took over for the Saturn company that $5500 is needed to replace. I couldnt afford it so I had my son drive my truck down and we rented a towing dolly and towed it home.I traded the car in, as is, but then asked this new dealer if my warranty was any good. They said that GM covered them for a while but not anymore. I was hoping there was a class action suit going on somewhere.

I purchased a 2007 Aura, and was told it was recently serviced after two weeks. I was told that the struts were shot in it, and its in need of new tires. I also had to change the brakes right away. The total cost would exceed $1,000.00. I was told by the dealership that the car was in great condition, nothing wrong with it. And the warning light that was on was an indication of low tire pressure. That light stayed on even after air was put into the tires.

Over the last two months, I have had some problems when I would turn my car off and the key would not disengage after. I fooled with it and the key would disengage. Was driving to work on 6/13 13 in the morning; I was running along at 65 when I heard a slight click noise. At the same time, the engine and the gauges cut off. The radio was still working. I coasted off-road, turned the key again, and the car started right up. Never had that happen.Got to work and went out four hours later to start the car. It started right up, but I could not turn it off. I tried everything I knew. I took it to a local shop, and they replaced the broken parts in the steering column for the ignition key and the switch assembly. Total cost was $598.00. Does anyone know if there was a silent recall for that issue that they are not telling people? I would like to know.

Faulty wave plate 2009 saturn vue XE - This wave plate cracked at 140,000 miles costing me around $3,000 to replace my transmission. When I asked to speak with a manager I was transferred to what I believe was the exact same voice under a different name again stated they understood and could not honor my request. If you put a faulty part in a car it should be covered by the company. This car is six years old and the transmission should not fail if quality made.

I have a 2007 Saturn ION 3. Bought it used since my last one was such a good car. Had the recall ignition changed a few months ago. It is cold here today, very cold but we had below zero for WEEKS last year and my other Saturn started every morning (no garage but between other cars). I just went out there to warm it up, the steering is turned, like it got turned and locked up (which will happen from time to time). The normal trick is to turn the steering the best you can the direction it does go then turn the key.. NO LUCK.. Tried it for over 30 min. I put heat on the steering and heat on the Transmission stick area in the car just in case cold was an issue. NO LUCK. Ughhhhh I saw where trying to rock the car and try it.. and to try hooking up a jump just in case the battery is low due to electronic steering.. Do not think it is low but always worth a try. Now to even get this thing towed will be a task. The position and gears, steering, etc. is all locked.. Believe if someone wants to steal this car please do so. Quit putting all the anti crap on it LOL.. Not a fan of going to dealerships for repairs, but if it is the new recall ignition then it is covered but if not then $$$ at a dealership... Plus they can just tell me it was something else and lie.

I have a 2004 Saturn Vue with 90,000 miles. This vehicle was purchased used in 2004 with only 12,000 miles. The other day, as I was using the On-ramp to gather speed to enter I-70, my transmission suddenly started shuddering and the vehicle lost its ability to propel forward. I was almost slammed from behind by a vehicle travelling at 65mph. The sudden deceleration put my life and the life of others at risk. I have always completed my regularly scheduled maintenance, and this is the first time I had experienced a transmission issue in this vehicle.I am appalled at the lack of accountability on the part of GM. On April 16, 2009, GM agreed to a class action settlement concerning widespread issues with the 2002-2005 Saturn Vue and 2003-2004 Saturn Ion VTi (CVT) transmissions. Basically, they admitted there is a serious defect with the transmissions, BUT HAVE NOT FULFILLED THE TERMS OF THE SETTLEMENT, ARE NOT COVERING THE COST OF REPAIRS AS DESIGNATED IN THE SETTLEMENT, AND HAVE NOT NOTIFIED VEHICLE OWNERS OF ITS EXISTENCE. From what I can gather, GM skated out of fulfilling their end of the settlement due to filing for bankruptcy protection. I had to really dig to find any pertinent information regarding this class action lawsuit. If you would like more information, check out ** for more information regarding the suit. It may be time to reignite the fire behind this issue, and potentially save some lives.

My 2007 Saturn Aura XR with approx. 80,000 miles would not engage in gear. After towing it to transmission repair shop, was told it had essentially disintegrated and was completely shot. I have been reading hundreds of identical complaints with this model year transmission. When I emailed GM customer service, I was told my VIN was not part of this transmission recall. Many others were told the same thing yet its the same problem with this model year (The door was damaged when it rolled into a pole when I thought it was engaged in park). Repairs are in excess of $3,000 and with no Saturn parts available. Clearly a defect. There should be assistance with repairs. Seems US auto makers get a bailout yet consumers get screwed. I think Im going to kill myself from the financial downfall that this car has put me in. I owned it for 8 months (February 2011) and bought for $12,000. The first repair was rebuilding the transmission at $4000. Second repair was at $200 and it was for the battery that’s draining for no good reason. Third repair is for a bad celluloid and a bad fuel pressure sensor; cost is $675. I also have the problem with the steering wheel. I’m just waiting for that one to go next.$12,000 plus $4,000 plus $200 plus $675 for a total of $16,875. That’s the cost for a 2007 Saturn Aura with 65,000 miles on it and no warranty. I hate you GM. My wife was on errands with the kids in our 2007 Saturn Outlook, which she loves. Well, it just stopped moving. She couldnt put it in forward or reverse. She called a friend to get it towed to his service shop. At the shop, he got it to move a little, then it stopped again. He said he recently had an Acadia, in which a part in the transmission broke and shredded the gears and got into all the innards. As it cost about $3500 to repair, he suggested that we call GM to see if they can help out with it.I found a number and spoke with Heather, who was great, calling me back every step of the way. She put me on the line with Denny, the head mechanic for Matthews Auto Group where we bought the vehicle and where we have the Outlook serviced. We spoke of the incident when it stopped working and he said he would get to it in a few days, which I said was okay. He didnt remember but we spoke before this when the vehicle was brought in for the timing chain recall. It took four times to get it right, but Matthews treated my wife so nice; we felt comfortable with them. So this time, we called OnStar and had it towed to Matthews so Denny could look at it. When he called back, he said that it was a broken wave plate in the transmission, and in a roundabout way agreed that it may cost what the other mechanic said, about $3500.On calling my friend, the mechanic, for an explanation, he said that the wave plate is a cheap $20 part that is known to crack and destroy the transmission. He had called a friend at Country Club Auto who said that he works on an average of 2 GM transmissions per week between Outlook, Acadia, and Traverse. The Matthews customer service rep called the next day and said that they drained some fluid and found metal shavings. I asked how the mechanic diagnosed the problem as a bad wave plate if he didnt open it up? The customer service rep said he had an offer from the district supervisor of GM, to give us $3000 off a new vehicle or split the cost of repair 50/50, approximately $1750 plus tax, our cost. When asked for a breakdown of the cost of services and materials, he got uptight and refused, stating only that the transmission would come out of the box and into the vehicle and the fluid would be added. The old transmission would go into the box and sent back to GM. It was then presented as a one time offer, take it or leave it. I said that I was disappointed in GM for not doing the right thing. This is a known problem with Outlook, Acadia, and Traverse. Its all over the internet. I went on to say that the tow truck operator for OnStar that picked up the vehicle said, Oh, an Outlook. Transmission, right? Ive been picking up a lot of those lately and Acadias and Traverses.I also said to the rep that we were totally surprised by the breakdown since the last OnStar Diagnostic report that we got stated, based on our diagnostics check on 08/19/2012, all systems are normal. Diagnostic: Complete. No action needed. Four days later, my wife and kids are stranded on the roadside. The rep repeated that the offer was a one time offer, one that he did not have to give since the vehicle was five months out of warranty. If it did not make me happy, then he would save the money to make someone else happy. I honestly said that of course I am not happy with having to spend $1800 for a new transmission that only has 73,000 miles on it (27,000 miles under warranty limit). He seemed to be a little taken aback by my knowledge of the wave plate issue with these transmissions, how a $20 part could self-destruct and wreak havoc with the transmissions. Take it or leave it, was the answer. That is all the GM district manager was authorized to offer. I would get back to him.The next day, a GM rep named Keith called to offer the same, but more politely. As a lifetime customer of GM vehicles, I repeated my disappointment in GM, but said that I would get back to him. He asked if I would like to file a complaint with GM. I said, No, but I would like to file a complaint against the Matthews rep. The next day Keith, the GM rep, called and asked of my intentions, and I said, I guess that I would take the 50/50. He left off saying that he would get going on making it happen. The following day I missed a call on the cell phone that I thought was the Matthews customer service guy so I called him. He said, No it wasnt him. I said, Well, youve got me by the balls (pardon me) so I guess I am taking the 50/50 offer. He replied that it was rescinded. I got off the phone with him and called Keith, the GM service guy, to ask about it but he was not in. The next day Keith reversed himself and said that indeed the offer was revoked. I asked if there were anyone else that I can speak to. He said he would have his manager call me. The next day a curtly speaking person called to say that they are not willing to budge on their decision. This is not the customer service that I have come to enjoy and depend on for my family from GM and the Matthews Auto Group. What can be done?

I started smelling gas in my 2006 Saturn Ion in October of 2016 and took into a local service center to have it checked. They informed me that it was the fuel pump and it needed to be replaced right away. Well in my mind all I was thinking is my car could catch on fire so I agreed and they did the repairs on 11/11/2016 to the tune of $437.79. Later I find out that this was a special coverage recall and that my local dealer would have did the job at no cost to me. I called customer care and explained that I felt like this was an emergency and was not thinking about my local dealership which is 20 miles away. She gave me a case # and told me to get a reimbursement form from dealership and submit the papers and surely they could do something. Well I sent paperwork off in January 2017 and now in March since I have not heard anything I decided to contact them. They informed me that my claim was denied and that my vehicle still has the coverage so if it happens again take it to the dealership. I told her how upset I was and this was awful that I am out off pocket for something that was their fault. My car is 11 years old with 104,050 miles on it and the cap for the coverage is I think 150,000 miles. I would hope that a fuel pump would last longer than a few thousand miles. I have had nothing but problem with this car from the moment I bought it and I agree with everyone else about never owning another GM!!

The person from GM then got a GM dealer from Austin on the phone with me who proceeded to tell me if I bring it in for $115 they will hook it up to figure out what was wrong. I have got an estimate for approx $400 to fix it. I was told the ignition was about $60 but if the housing is bad that adds another $160, $50 for a new key and programming. In 2006, I purchased a new 2006 Saturn Ion. I loved it at the time, but since then have had numerous problems. It is a lemon. I had to have the ignition system replaced because my key would get stuck in it every time I turned the car off. It is now doing this again. I have had the entire computer system replaced twice because all the gauges went hay wire while driving and wouldnt stop. Recently this has started happening again. Two years ago, my automatic windows stopped rolling down, then suddenly started working again for about 2 months, and now dont work. Talk about fun when going through a drive through and having to open your door because your windows dont work. My cigarette lighter fuse has to be replaced about once every 3 months because it shorts out. Last week I was adjusting my rear view mirror and it just fell off. It didnt come unglued from the window, but the ball and socket joint somehow broke and cant be fixed except by ordering a completely new mirror because for some reason you cant order that one little plastic part that broke. For the last year my gas gauge has been completely inaccurate. After filling up completely it says I only have 1/2 tank of gas and after driving for 20 minutes my gauge is on empty. So I have to rely on my low fuel message to come on, which Im sure wont be long before that breaks as well. The only good thing is that I havent had any engine trouble...yet.

I purchased a 2008 Saturn Vue XR on July 7, 2011. On September 2, 2011, smoke started coming through the vents with a strong smell like something was burning. It went away and didnt return for the rest of the day. Well, I didnt drive it for the rest of the day actually. On September 3rd and 4th, it did the same thing while I was driving and became worse if I turned the air conditioner on. Not even two months after purchasing this vehicle, and already the vehicles first trip at the shop on September 5, 2011. The mechanic explained that the hose for heating/air was cleared of any blockage. On September 9, 2011, I had to return it to the shop for the same problem. They gave me an oil change and checked the hose. There was no vapor/mist coming out of the vents for 2 days. The third trip to the shop was on September 16, 2011 for the same issues; strong coolant smell, vapor or mist coming out of the vents, and oily film on the windshield. On September 9th, I called and filed a complaint with Saturn customer service. I was told to take it to a GM certified dealer and have them diagnose the problem. My appointment was on September 23, 2011 at Mike Anderson in Merrillville, Indiana. On September 21, 2011, I attempted to start the vehicle and it wouldnt start. I had to use my husbands vehicle to take my child to school. In the meantime, my husband used a battery conditioner to recondition the battery and jumper cables to start the vehicle. I went to Mike Anderson Chevrolet on September 23, 2011. Joshua ** took care of me in the service department. They kept the vehicle overnight. On September 24, 2011, I was quoted $1,600.00 for Heater Core Replacement due to a fracture in the core causing an antifreeze leakage. I chose this Saturn Ion due to cost and availability at the time. I was not familiar this brand of vehicle before purchasing. But the size of the car and the cost was what I needed. Plus the vehicle was very good on gas mileage. But I did not like the car. Disliked the battery compartment in the trunk. I did not like that most of the parts where cheap plastic that wasnt durable. And I ended up having a lot of problems with the wiring system and also the headlights. As soon as I would replace the bulbs, within a few days they would stop working on the passenger side.

I financed a used car (2009 Saturn Vue) on the evening of 2/22/13. On 2/23/13 early afternoon, as I was driving with family members, the car caught on fire. A young lady pulled up next to me and told me that I had fire falling from underneath my car. We immediately pulled over, jumped out, and called 911. The firemen came, put the fire out and did an investigation for their report. They said it looked electrical, but couldnt say for sure. I had the car towed back to the dealer. They were closed on that Saturday so I had to wait until Monday to talk to someone. They do not want to take accountability. They stated that they had to treat this as a new car sale and I had to file an insurance claim. I told them that I hadnt even had the car 24 hours, that I want my downpayment back and the contract cancelled so that I can go and get another car elsewhere. An inspector went out (from my insurance company) and also said it looked electrical, but he could not say that that was the definite cause of the fire. The dealership wants me to go through with the claim. They offered to pay my insurance deductible, but thats it. The sales manager went on and on about how the Saturn Vue was the best used car that they had on the lot and how superior their service inspections are, etc. That is all the more reason for me to be concerned. Them offering to pay a $500 deductible does nothing for my insurance going up, my inability to be able to trade that car in down the line since it had a fire. And since the root cause of the problem could not be found, there is nothing to keep it from happening again. I want my down payment ($1500) back and I want to go elsewhere and get another vehicle as soon as possible. I am currently without a car. I spoke with the salesperson and the sales manager. I was told that the general manager would call me and he did not, nor did the owner. I should not be held accountable for their car catching on fire in less than 24 hours. I drove home from the dealership Friday night, to my cousins funeral on Saturday morning and the car caught on fire while I was driving in the funeral procession early Saturday afternoon.

Bought my 03 Saturn wagon 5 years ago. Engine light stays on 3 years now. Clears out with mechanic. Get it to pass inspection. Light comes back on. Horn died, trunk lock had to be replaced, eats tires and sway bars like crazy. Put new brakes every year. Everything rusted underneath. New manifold. Needed catalytic converter twice. Now I just cant put any more funds into this car. Seeking a different vehicle now. Only has 167,000 miles. I drove a 96 Subaru wagon into the ground. It had over 200,000 miles and still ran awesome. It was the body that finally gave out. Disappointed in the many needed repairs. Doesnt shift out of first without struggling either. The clock gains a minute every couple weeks.

I kept it there and put tape around to cover the key. Now my car is flipping out my lights on my dash, comes on and off. Power steering is not working. I changed the powering steering, still nothing. We have had our 2005 Saturn Ion for three years. Nothing but problems! Two months into owning the car, I was leaving to take my daughter to school and the security light came on and would not let me start my car. It took ten minutes to start. I had the ignition replaced and only two months later, it happened again. I took it in again and they told me they didnt see any problems with it. I took it home and now, we have programmed ourselves to leave the house 10-15 minutes earlier to make sure the car will start. Right now, at this very moment, my car will not start. It has not started at all today, I tried numerous times but nothing. When I turn the key, the security light flashes and the engine light comes on too. The dealership doesnt have any open appointments till Tuesday and now are down to one car. Starting tomorrow, I will get to wake my children up at 4am to take my husband to work in Roseville. Ridiculous! How can a dealership be able to stay in business selling faulty vehicles and never have to recall any of the major, not to mention, extremely dangerous problems? An attorney, class action lawsuit? Enough is enough. Maybe after that, then maybe GM will actually do their job and fix the problems that obviously exist.

Almost a year ago, the throttle body on my 2005 Saturn Ion became gummed up and I had to take it in for service. The throttle body was not a major fix but once my car was at the shop, it turns out a totally unrelated issue occurred as the ignition switch broke or the shop mechanic broke it and that needed to be replace before they were able to determine that the throttle body was only gummed up, a $50 fix but the ignition switch was $200 plus! And guess what is now acting up? I cant get into the car and turn the ignition switch on the first turn 100% of the time. Mind you, there has been only one key on the key ring since the change last year, as to make sure there was no added stress on the ignition switch. I am going to have to take the car in again for the ignition switch because the problem is getting worse and worse. It seems only a matter of time before I wont be able to turn the ignition switch to start my car. There definitely seems to be a flaw in the ignition switch on the 2005 Saturn Ion. When will there be a recall to correct this and what do we do in the mean time? Keep paying $200 plus?

I bought my 2006 Saturn Ion with only 30,000 or so miles around this time last year. This past winter, it was constantly not turning on. It would take me about 50+ tries in order for it to start. I took it to several trusted mechanics who couldnt find any problem at all. Now as I am waiting for a potential employer to call me back about a job, I have no vehicle. My transmission just stopped working! The gears change perfectly fine but drive, neutral, and first and second just dont do anything at all. But reverse works perfectly well.

I purchased 1995 Saturn with 63,000 miles in 2010. The car reached 75,000 miles on Dec 2011. The cylinder head cracked and needs to replaced for approximate cost of $2000.00. Research shows cars from 1992-1999 had a cylinder head defect in the design and Saturn extended the warranty to 100,000 miles but due to the age of the car, GM will not help out with repair cost. Read from other customers, no one got help. GM does not acknowledge the warranty. I just want consumers to know Saturn cars may look good, have low mileage but after 50,000 miles, trouble awaits around the corner.

I just got off the phone with GM Corporate. They again are refusing to take responsibility for the brake issue on the Saturn Aura. I bought a 2007 Saturn Aura new. At 27,300 I had to replace the brakes and rotors. Then at 46,000 I had to replace the brakes and have the calipers cleaned. I finally gave up and traded in the car because of GMs refusal to take responsibility for the AURA brake problems. This morning I reported General Motors to the NHTSA (888) 327-4236 and to the Federal Trade Commission (877) 382-4357. GM says they will not reimburse me until there is a recall. Please report your problems so we can force a recall. The number to GM Corporate for Saturn is (800) 553-6000.

I paid $4976.23 for a new tranny and a rebuilt transfer case. The car has lost significant MPGs and will not shift correctly since the new install. It has greatly reduced power at take-off and there is screeching/clunking noise when turning left. GM dealership told me I need a new front differential now, a cost of $5,400. This car is a disgrace. I am still making payments on it. I have paid more in repairs then I have on my monthly payments. Is there any advice on reimbursement for all these expense? Do I have recourse?

I loved my Saturn until now. The first thing that it started doing was the oil pressure light came on saying oil pressure low, turn engine off. I pulled over and turned the engine off, waited a few minutes and turned it back on. Message was gone. Then a couple days later the stabilitrak error message came up saying traction control off service stabilitrak. Engine speed decreasing. Couldnt go above 20 mph. Turned car off. Restarted car error message gone. Then transmission started slipping until it wouldnt go out of 2nd gear. Took the car to the shop and 4000.00 dollars later the transmission was replaced. Now one week later, the stabilitrak message came back on while driving home today and in a curve the steering wheel locked up. This car is horrible. I have never had this many problems out of a car before. Back to the shop where Im sure I will have to break the bank. Again! Saturn needs to make a recall on these cars. How many complaints about the same thing has to be posted before they actually do something about it. Never again. I will tell everyone to avoid buying a GM product.

Like so many others here, my key often gets sucked in the ignition of my 2004 Saturn Ion and either a) wont start for 15 minutes, or b) wont release after I try to turn the car off. Twice, the ignition turned off while I was driving down the freeway. Today, I had the added fun of the key locking in the ACC position and it wont turn off. I had to remove a fuse to turn the engine off. I have replaced the ignition column (I believe it is what my mechanic called it) as the key was already getting stuck and would not release the key unless I waited several minutes and would not start for 15 to 20 minutes much of the time. That was about 8 months ago. Clearly this did not help much. I cannot emphasize enough what a piece of garbage this car is. I will never own another GM car as a direct result of my experience with it. I have poured an insane amount of money into it to correct a wide variety of defects but I am done. It isnt worth repairing one more time. It is too bad that American made equals garbage.

I own a Saturn Ion level 2, and today, my car got stuck in the on position. I could not get the key out or shut the car off. I had to take the neg wire from battery to shut things down, but the key is still in the ignition switch. What is going to be done for all of us that owns this car? And in this economy where it is sink or swim, eat or die, now we all have to worry about this problem which is very costly. Who is going to help us all out? There are a whole lot of people with the same problem, so obviously, there is a major problem here with our cars. Someone has to take some action for us. Who is going to help us? Do I have to keep putting the neg wire back on just to drive, take it off to shut it off? Come on. Someone somewhere must be in position to take this problem on because like myself and others, we are all spent out and cannot keep paying for a problem that is a problem with the manufacturing of this car! So, can anyone tell me where to start and how to fix this bucket of plastic? Class action suit. seems to me, should happen but they are no longer in business, so who do you sue? Not to mention, I still owe 2 years of payments on this car. Wow! They said it is the ignition lock cylinder but it comes with no key. So how the heck do you start your car if you get a new one? Does anyone know what to do? Help!

I bought my 2003 Saturn L200 in July of 2009 with only 31,000 miles on it. It was great for two years, until the Summer of 2011 when the odometer started spinning out of control. It added 50,000+ miles on it in a short time. It costs $1400 to fix the BCM (body control module) and took a month to fix. The dealer had to backorder the part. Now, my fuel pump has died repeatedly, leaving me stranded multiple times. The fuel pump at OReilly Auto Parts costs $350 and this was the cheapest price by far. Its currently at the mechanic for the third time and he is stumped. After the car died the second time, we figured we got a bad fuel pump. But somehow it is not getting power to the fuel pump. I was promised the GM would continue to uphold Saturns level of service. All Ive seen are expensive parts and time-consuming repairs. I will never buy a GM product again.

Our 2009 Saturn Outlook ONLY has 53,000 miles on it. The 100,000 mile warranty was up because we have just barely had our vehicle 5 years. We have taken it to the same dealer for the life of the car, and taken very good care of it. I was driving to work the other day and my power steering and transmission completely went out. I almost lost control of the vehicle several times. It started when I was at a stoplight, when I pressed the gas to accelerate once it turned green, then my car lurched forward but only revved up. I made it work and then it wouldnt go in reverse at all!. I had it towed to a trusted mechanic. He told us it was indeed the transmission and power-steering but also that the rack and pinion broke. We had our car to the dealer several times for the whining noise to be fixed but they only ever told me they didnt hear the noise. I called GM, who told us to have it towed to a certified GM dealer and that the power steering should have been under a special coverage warranty. Turns out GM was sued and lost in court because of the power steering. The dealer then refused to diagnose my car without us paying them a $1,000 up front. I told them it had already been diagnosed, and if this was covered under their special warranty, then why on earth should I have to pay this large amount of money up front. The service manager told me he did NOT believe that our problem was covered under this special warranty and that the transmission doesnt go out because of the power steering. He said one doesnt have anything to do with the other. Well funny, then how they both went out at the exact same time. I went round and round with both the dealer and GM and neither of them want to take responsibility for what has happened. Especially considering we have documented proof (the dealer has it in their computers) that we had our car to them multiple times to have THIS exact issue fixed. I believe it is time to get another law suit started. GM needs to fix their faulty vehicles BEFORE someone gets severely hurt or dies! We had it towed a 3rd time to be taken care of by our mechanic since the dealer refused to diagnose our vehicle. Do not ever trust GM or their Certified dealers, all they care about is lining their pockets.

In January 2010, my family purchased a one owner, 2003 Saturn Vue 6 cyl. It was a great SUV until last week. That was the day the VTI transmission decided to come apart whilst I was driving on the Interstate at 70mph in rush hour traffic. Upon getting it into the old Saturn dealership, I was told by the service manager that this was a known problem, GM had an extended policy on it and I should call the above number to start a claim. I went home and looked this known problem that was not issued as a recall but rather as an internal service memo. Imagine my dismay at finding out that the previous owners had been informed of the problem, traded the Saturn in and were able to buy it all within the space of a month. It seems, according to the attorneys that filed the class action suit against GM, that the notice was to travel with the title (of course it didnt or wed not have bought the car). We were to be offered 5K in credits on a new GM car and there would be no punishment on the trade-in of the piece of junk we now owned. Because it was not recalled, Carfax, NTSB, et al. didnt warn us either.A week later, I finally got a call from GM and was told that I was outside the class, but GM would look into getting me something, no promises. The offer came through today. Theyd give us the 5K in credits toward a new GM car, but nothing else. No trade in (that 5K is the trade in) value and nothing more.

I bought my VUE new in 2003. Loved this car. Just right for me. All of a sudden it started stalling out while driving down the street. All the dash lights came on, the steering and brakes were gone. All of this in rush hour traffic in Denver. Took it in...paid out just over $900 to try to find out what it was, didnt help. Picked it up on Friday, stalled in traffic on Saturday. Did some research found out this was a problem with the 2002-2004 Saturn VUE and Ion. During those years the Saturn VUE was on a car chassis or so Im told - and beginning 2005 on a truck base. I went to the GM dealer after this last brush with death and was told I probably needed a new transmission.....$3,800. Found out about the GM class action suits in California and other places regarding the Saturn VUE. I had the car towed....not driving it. Certainly not trading it in for someone else to be hurt. Looking for a good used car now.

I have a 2003 Saturn Vue, which I purchased used in 2009. The transmission went out in 09 and I had to replace it. GM would only do 50/50 so I had to come up with over $2000 myself. I am now having problems with it again. It needs another replacement and I was told that the warranty on the first transmission was for 12,000 miles or one year so GM will not help with replacement. The only thing GM will do is give a small credit towards a new GM vehicle.

The timing chain broke and caused the valves to bend which means the car needs a new engine. It looks like this is a recurring problem with Vues. Our car has 105,00 miles on it. It seems to me that the company needs to make some kind of offer to remedy this issue since it happens so frequently on these products. In talking with many mechanics, this is the only car that has this problem.

I have had to replace the ignition key & tumbler and housing twice in the last 5 years because my key gets stuck in the ignition and the car will not turn off. The last time I did this was in August 2010. Now, it is starting again. When I put my car into park the car will shut off, but it takes me about 10 minutes to get the key out. I have to restart, back-up, pull forward, rinse & repeat. It hasnt reached the point yet to where the car wont turn off but I know it is near in the future since this is how it started the other two times. I really cant afford another $600 to get this fixed again. This is a constant problem yet GM will not issue a recall to help the owners out. I will never ever again buy another GM product. This is frustrating! Does anyone happen to know of a class-action lawsuit that may be in the works? If so, please share.

Ive had numerous problems with my 2005 Saturn Ion since I purchased it barely used in 2008. First, it was an ominous Check Engine light which after spending $400 in unneeded repairs, turned out to be something with the master computer. After I had the ignition replaced, now I cant get the car to start. The dealership cant find anything wrong with it and the mechanic says that its the master computer needs to be replaced. On top of all that, all of the automatic windows died. Had to quit my job because of my health and Im so fed up with all this, I could just scream.
