2025 Rivian R1S

The 2025 Rivian R1S is a full-size, all-electric SUV with three rows of seating (up to seven passengers) that blends high performance, off-road capability and everyday utility. It’s one of the more ambitious electric SUVs in the market, offering strong powertrain options, sizeable battery packs, and advanced features tailored for both road and adventure use.

Powertrain & Performance

The R1S offers multiple powertrain configurations: from dual-motor AWD setups through tri-motor and quad-motor variants. In one dual-motor version it produces around 665 horsepower and 829 lb-ft of torque

The quad-motor version elevates performance further: approx 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 lb-ft of torque in its top form.

Battery capacity is large: one test showed about a 141.5 kWh pack in a dual-motor version.

Driving range (depending on configuration): up to about 410 miles (≈660 km) in ideal conditions and certain configurations.

Off-road capability: With air suspension and selectable ride heights, it offers impressive ground clearance (in some measurements up to about 15 inches/≈38 cm).

Towing capacity: Up to around 7,700 lbs (≈3,493 kg) depending on configuration.

Interior, Utility & Features

The cabin is designed to seat up to seven, with a three-row layout. While the third row may be best for shorter trips or children, the layout offers flexibility when compared to many two-row EVs.

Cargo space is diverse: With the seats folded and depending on battery/configuration, there's plenty of usable load room for gear or family use.

Advanced tech: The R1S supports large infotainment displays, over-the-air updates, and has features aimed at both everyday comfort and adventure (such as water fording, off-road modes, trail features).

Premium materials and finishes: With Rivian’s positioning, the cabin workmanship, material quality and finish elevate it above basic EV-SUV competitors.

Utility: The flat EV “skateboard” platform enables a low floor and some design advantages (better space utilization, lower centre of gravity) compared to legacy-SUV platforms converted to EVs.

Strengths

Very strong blend of performance, utility and electric capability: high power, large battery/range, three-row seating, and strong off-road potential.

Uncommon combination: Many EVs either focus on luxury or performance or utility; the R1S aims to combine all three.

Off-road readiness: The combination of air suspension, selectable ride heights, strong torque and robust design makes it more capable than many luxury-EV SUVs in rougher conditions.

Future-proof EV investment: By choosing an EV platform designed from the ground up (rather than a legacy ICE architecture), the R1S looks ahead in terms of architecture and capability.

Trade-Offs / Things to Consider

Cost: Being a premium electric SUV with high specification, the purchase price will be high compared to mainstream SUVs.

Size & weight: With the large battery and premium build, it is heavy and large—so parking, manoeuvring, and urban driving may be more challenging than smaller SUVs.

Efficiency vs performance: In the most powerful trims (tri/quad motor) or with heavy off-road use, range will drop significantly compared to the best-case figures.

Third-row usability: As with many full-size SUVs, the third row is more constrained than the first two rows—ideal for children or occasional use rather than full-time adult seating.

Charging infrastructure: To fully exploit the large battery and potential long-range, access to robust DC fast-charging and home overnight charging are key.

Service & support: As a newer brand and advanced high-performance EV, service network, parts, resale values and long-term reliability are areas buyers should investigate carefully.

Ideal Buyer Profile

The 2025 Rivian R1S is a great choice for someone who:

Wants a high-end electric SUV that offers more than just commuting ability—someone who cares about performance, off-road or adventure use, and has a family or needs seating for multiple passengers.

Values capability: towing, cargo, adventure potential (hiking, camping, trail driving) as well as daily usability.

Is committed to EV ownership and has access to charging infrastructure (home charger or reliable public fast-charging) and is okay managing an EV of this size.

Is comfortable paying a premium for brand, capability and performance rather than just minimum cost.

Prefers a vehicle that can serve both as a capable everyday family vehicle and as a jump-in-the-mountains or off-road weekend adventurer.
