New Car Preview: DeLorean Alpha5 EV Brings The Future To the Present
Posted On: May 31, 2022
If you didn’t know, DeLorean is slated for a return as the company has a new life to build new DeLorean vehicles, ones that pay homage to the classic DMC-12. However, the new DeLorean company is a new entity, and the new vision is far and beyond what we know that helped bring us the DMC-12 that was partly made famous as the time machine in our loved Back to The Future movies. DeLorean will first make its new presence known in the new Alpha5 EV. The new DeLorean Alpha5 is a concept that embodies some of the principles of the popularized DMC-12 where you see it has the expected gullwing doors and “this baby’s electric!” While it won’t require 1.21 gigawatts of power, it will have more than 100 kWh from a battery pack to power “multiple electric motors” as the company claims. The electric power will yield a range of at least 300 miles and hit 60 mph in just under 3 seconds, and if you’re wondering, it will hit 88 mph in 4.4 seconds – just in case. As additional nods to the classic DMC-12 and its Back to The Future lineage, the first 88 examples of the Alpha5 produced “will serve as an avatar for an associated NFT, meaning they won’t be road-registered and suitable only for track use.” Take that for what you will, but we think DeLorean is on to something here, which may pave a path for about four other new DeLorean models from the registered names of Alpha, Alpha2, Alpha 3, and AlphaIV. One of those may be an SUV, which would be a volume seller to help bolster the portfolio, which will not be all-electric just yet and could see some of those use a hydrogen powertrain of some sort. The new 2+2-seater Alpha5 will debut at Monterey Car Week on August 18th and eventually reach production in Italy in 2024 where it is expected to have a price tag starting around $200,000 with a launch edition that will look mostly like the concept you see here, which is claimed to be nearly in production form. We can’t wait to go back to the future!
