Motorcycle Troubleshooting

What would cause a motorcycle not to start?
Here are some of the common things to check when your motorcycle won’t start:
1. Make sure the kill switch is in the correct position.
2. Check that the battery is charged.
3. Check that there is enough fuel and the petcock is on.
4. Make sure the bike is set in neutral.
5. Make sure your intake and exhaust are not clogged.
6. Make sure the spark plugs wires are attached.
If those things check out, continue reading for more tips on getting your motorcycle started.

Check the Spark
With a brand new spark plug, set the gap to at least 1/4″ and set the plug on the cylinder head to ground it.
Push the starter button or kick the kick starter and watch the spark plug.
If you see a strong blue spark jump from the electrode, your spark is solid and you can move on to checking the fuel delivery.
If the spark is weak or there is no spark at all, check that the battery is fully charged and go through all the electrical connections. When the motorcycle has a good spark and a full battery, you may need to inspect the ignition system itself (points or electronic).

Check the Fuel Delivery
With good spark and compression, it’s time to troubleshoot the carburetors.
Any old motorcycle that has been sitting for a long time is likely to have some gummed-up or varnished carbs. If fuel delivery proves to be the issue, a thorough carb cleaning can usually solve the problem.
If the motorcycle engine starts, but will only continue running with the choke on, the idle jets are likely clogged.
When the motorcycle won’t start at all, then either the fuel needle/seat or the petcock is clogged shut or stuck. If you’re able to start the engine with a little bit of gasoline or starting fluid down the spark plug hole, there is most likely a problem somewhere along the fuel delivery line – from the petcock to the needle valve.
Once you can start it up, you’ll be ready to tune it to a roadworthy condition.

Why Does My Motorcycle Backfire?
A backfire describes the loud bang or pop that comes from your motorcycle’s exhaust.
Motorcycle backfire can be caused by:
• Improper timing.
• Fuel mixture is too rich.
• Fuel mixture is too lean.
• Compression is too low.
• Poor spark.
• Improper exhaust pipes for the bike.

What are the Symptoms of a Bad Carburetor?
Your carbs likely need to be cleaned and tuned if you experience any of the following:
• Rich conditions.
• Lean conditions.
• Backfires.
• Sputtering.
• Bike won’t start.
• Loss of power during acceleration.
• High ideal.
• Gas leaking from the float bowl.

Why does my Motorcycle Leak Oil?
Oil leaks can be caused by:
• Bad gaskets/uneven gasket surfaces (most common).
• Loose engine bolts.
• Worn engine case seals.
• Oil pan drain plug.
• Cracked engine case.

Why is my Throttle Sticking?
Your throttle is likely sticking due to either:
• Improperly adjusted throttle cable.
• Broken throttle cable.
• Improperly lubricated throttle cable.

Bought a new 2019 KTM 690 enduro in March thi year. Had first service at 500 miles. Headed to Spanish Pyrenees and clutch failed. All fluid had disappeared!!Rode all morning with no clutch in the mountains until I found Petrol station that sold clutch fluid. Topped it up and it worked. Two days later all gone again. Counter shaft was leaking oil. Seat came apart. Huge disappointment to say the least. Rode home through France to uk on roads running my trip. My 14 days planned was now 5. Spent small fortune getting home. Could of got home through repatriation on warranty but had a mate with me. Got home. Took bike to dealer who was very helpful. KTM were /are very poor. No phone number. No help. Poor response via email. Lack of knowledge from support people. Very poor and embarrassing. Now I have bike that has had clutch fluid in the oil and they wont do anything. I will seriously reconsider before buying KTM again. Disgusting after sales handling. Poor quality parts on their bikes. I feel like going to KTM UK and kicking off big time. I aim to tell as many people as I can about my experience.

Extremely poor and unsatisfactory customer service - faceless organisation. Wrote to them regarding dissapointment of buying a Premium 15K motorcycle, with no owners manual supplied. Their response sent me to a link, where I was told I could obtain a manual - turned out to be a shop, selling the manual for 30 !Lodged a complaint, then received an email advising the case was closed. Will be trading in for a Ducati in 2 months time . Having owned Gen 1.0, 2.0 and now Gen 3.0 models over the last 5 years, this will be my last KTM - Brand loyalty does not extend to a paper handbook that costs KTM a few s - Shameful attitude to loyal customers - avoid.

Zero adjustment.Back to the useless dealer 3 times and they say its OK. Its not OK KTM, get your act together and come up with a solution not just a new model.

Poor quality build, rust on most of my nuts and bolts after just one year of owning a garaged brand new 790 Duke. the TFT screen developed cracks, a common issue on KTM forums, and a replacement was refused under warranty as the 2020 warranty wasnt done on time! Absolutely no allowance for us being in lockdown for almost half the year, and not a serviced part so totally irrelevant. Very poor, KTM, not how to look after your customers.

Bought a new rc390 from a dealer in Yorkshire in May 2018.
Bought a new rc390 from a dealer in Yorkshire in May 2018. I was very let down by the condition at collection.Nothing was shown or gone through. Controls etc. Once at home as collected in my van. It would not start. CANBUS ERROR on the dash. Had to take it back, 50 plus miles from my home at my expense. Most issues sorted, but upon first service, the valve clearances are supposed to be checked. Not done at the supplying dealer.Contacted Mr Matt Walker at Ktm. Agreed they should of been checked and they will do them for me free. But know cannot get into my local service centre in Newcastle, as they state not ktm no more. But still on there website etc. Really bad service from ktm. So still waiting for them to tell me where it will go as no other dealers in the North of UK. The bike will never go back to the Yorkshire dealer, as very poor service. Asked upon service if some of the free play could be taken off the throttle. After the service report from mechanic.( movement from left to right no binding on cable ) This bike is fly by wire, no cable on it. Or would of done myself. So would you trust a mechanic who told you that !!!. Also major issues with the suspension bottoming out at 40 mph while running in on a b road. I am 20 stone plus my gear, but still not near maximum weight motorbike is allowed to be gross. I really wish i had never considered a ktm, have rode bikes for over 35 years every year, also a qualified city and guilds mechanic. The bike high sided myself but caught it as only 40 mpg due to running in. A close friend following me was also very shocked by this. Now putting together a possible legal suite on the front and rear suspension. Many forums are complaining about it being very poor. Hopefully my outcome will be good, but please speak up if you are not happy, they are not cheap even though built in India. Regards
