Immaculate Porsche 924 Rally Car Looks Ready To Eat Dirt

Porsche is no stranger to motorsport. In fact, it has one of the longest and most successful careers of them all, and its lineup is proof that years and years of trickle-down motorsport knowledge makes it into Porsche road cars, and actually improves them. That being said, there's not much research and development that went into this little Safari rat. The Porsche 911 Turbo is a vision of performance engineering, and the Taycan is the future of cars incarnate, but this little 1978 Porsche 924 Safari that's on sale through Collecting Cars is as basic as they come, and we love it. Porsche has a long history of building off-road rally cars, and some of them have achieved great successes in major races such as the Australian Safari Rally, and the East African Safari Rally. The Porsche 911 has traditionally been the porker of choice for rally racing, but this 924 is here to prove us all wrong. This Safari build was completed early in 2022 and is finished in Silver with a classic Martini Racing livery. The car rolls on a set of 15-inch mesh alloy wheels with Toyo all-terrain tires bolted to wheel spacers, and even features a roof-mounted spare wheel, obligatory spot lamps, and mud flaps. Under the hood, this rally beast hides a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that sends waves of power to the rear wheels via a five-speed dog-leg manual transmission. A recent major service has seen the replacement of the radiator, spark plugs, thermostat, center muffler, aluminum rear silencer, battery, o-rings, distributor, alternator, wheel bearings, bonnet sound mat, roof rubbers, boot lid rubbers, brakes, windscreen, dashboard top, windscreen, and front headlights. The interior has also seen some rally modifications: a set of racing bucket seats fills the front of the cabin and D1 Racing harnesses will keep you and your navigator in place when you inevitably roll this thing. Classic VDO dials, a suede steering wheel, and a fire extinguisher all contribute to making this car feel like a true rally car. With only 58,220 kilometers on the clock, this car is actually too clean to race, but then again, it looks too cool not to. The current bid stands at €9,200 ($10,200) and bidding closes tomorrow.

This is a quick report as Porsche ownership is very subjective. Have owned an older Porsche Boxster since 2013, and must mention its easily the best car I have ever owed in 40 years. Mine's old, but its like an old race horse, it might be old but its still a race horse. If your lucky enough to own any Porsche, make the most of it whilst possible, before all vehicles become electric and loose their ability to excite the spirit and imagination.
