2022 Q2 Quarterly Sales: Americas Biggest Winners And Losers
Posted On: July 8, 2022
We're six months into 2022 and despite a rebound in sales last year the auto industry remains afflicted by dwindling inventory and numerous supply chain disruptions. Second-quarter sales (Q2) figures in the United States distressingly reflect the cumulative effect of these challenges, with an average drop in light vehicle sales of 21.1% despite high demand. Some, however, have been able to weather the storm better than others. We take a look at the five biggest winners and five biggest losers for Q2 sales in the USA and predict how the rest of the year will pan out. Winner: Polestar (+858.3%)rnPolestar's ambitious plan to boost sales tenfold to 290,000 vehicles in 2025 may not be so farfetched after all. Previously little more than a niche automaker with one aspirational coupe, the company's second-quarter sales volumes jumped by 858.3% compared to the same period last year to 2,300 units thanks to the arrival of the Polestar 2. Yes, that monumental percentage increase is possible because the company's overall production volumes remain far lower than the industry average, but in a period where the industry mood has been decidedly sullen, Polestar's growth is a rare silver lining. Looking AheadrnPolestar recently began trading on the Nasdaq and will launch its first SUV, the Polestar 3, later this year. The company looks primed for consistent growth over the next few months. Winner: Chrysler (+95%)rnUntil the Airflow EV arrives, Chrysler's minuscule lineup isn't terribly exciting. The aging 300 sedan won't be around for much longer and will become an EV in the next few years, leaving only the fleet-specific Voyager and Pacifica minivans to carry the baton. The latter has continued to thrive, finding 32,097 homes in Q2 of 2022, a 143% increase from last year. In fact, the Pacifica was solely responsible for Chrysler's Q2 sales rising by a brilliant 95%. Sales for the US light vehicle market as a whole declined by 21% in Q2 this year versus Q2 2021, underlining Chrysler's excellent performance over this period. Looking AheadrnIt can only get better for Chrysler from here. With the Pacifica keeping the brand alive, the Airflow EV will not only be the brand's first EV but will give it at least one crossover. US Head of Sales for Stellantis, Jeff Kommer, admitted that the company faces supply constraints, but this will be a bigger issue for high-selling brands under the company's umbrella like Ram and Jeep. Winner: Tesla (+53%)rnTesla's Q2 sales jumped by 53% to 118,700 units compared to the same period last year, an impressive number in isolation. Excessive price hikes and production delays have not prevented Elon Musk's company from growing in America, where a new Texas Gigafactory opened earlier this year. However, looking beyond the USA, Tesla's overall Q2 sales globally marked a rare decline of almost 18% compared to Q1. The company attributed much of this to forced shutdowns of its Shanghai factory due to lockdown regulations in China. Looking AheadrnTesla continues to be a giant in the EV space, but for how long? There is no sign of a cheaper Tesla EV, the Cybertruck isn't here yet, and competitors keep catching up. Volkswagen has said that Tesla has just two years left at the top, and China's BYD is making massive inroads in the EV space, too. Tesla won't go away anytime soon, but the competition is getting fiercer by the day. Winner: Genesis (+25.9%)rnGenesis sold 13,945 vehicles in the USA in the second quarter, up by 25.9% compared to the same period last year. The first GV60 electric crossover was delivered in the country during the second quarter, adding to a strong lineup that includes the GV80 SUV and the still-fresh G80 sedan. In June, Genesis sales increased for the 19th consecutive month year over year, and the upcoming Electrified GV70 is only set to continue this trend. Looking AheadrnAlthough the Hyundai Group's sales were down overall in Q2, much of this has been attributed to the chip shortage and low inventory. The smaller Genesis luxury brand has clearly been less affected, as shown by its growth in Q2. In early July, Hyundai sales boss Randy Parker hinted at more favorable year-on-year numbers for the remainder of 2022, which Genesis should also benefit from. Winner: McLaren (+23.3%)rnIt seems almost unfair to list McLaren, a low-volume exotic maker of high-end supercars, among mainstream brands. But in terms of Q2 percentages, the British marque is one of the few to see growth. 370 McLarens were sold in Q2 2022, up from 300 in the same period last year. The latest Artura is a fantastic hybrid supercar and cheaper than most other McLarens, and it appears to have helped the brand navigate various industry challenges in 2022, despite its own challenges in coming to market when promised. Looking AheadrnMcLaren's sales numbers are unlikely to fluctuate too dramatically for the rest of 2022; its first SUV is still years away. What may be more of a concern is impending strike action that is likely to cause serious supply issues for the automaker. Loser: Fiat (-72.1%)rnFiat has struggled for some time in the USA and, with only the quirky but unconvincing 500X crossover left in its local lineup, it's perhaps no great shocker that the brand sold a mere 249 cars, down from 891 in the second quarter of 2021. Everything Fiat does well, be it cutesy styling or small runabouts like the 500 hatchback, seems at odds with the tastes of American consumers. Looking AheadrnEven Lamborghini sells more cars than Fiat in the USA right now. It's difficult to see where the Italian marque goes from here without something more exciting like the Abarth Pulse, a sporty crossover based on the Fiat Pulse sold in other markets. The new 500 is a superb car, but Americans simply don't buy many small hatchbacks. We fear that Fiat, which wants to go fully electric by 2030, may not be around for much longer at all - at least in this country. Loser: Buick (-56.1%)rnOne of America's oldest carmakers is struggling. Buick sales slipped by a disastrous 56.1% in Q2 this year to only 28,929 units. A year ago over the same period, it sold 65,927 cars. A range of anonymous vehicles like the Enclave and the imminent demise of the smaller, dated Encore have no doubt contributed to the brand's slide. Buick's parent company, General Motors, reclaimed the sales crown from Toyota in the second quarter and none of its other brands suffered the same decline in sales. This points to a problem with the Buick brand itself rather than the supply constraints in the industry. Looking AheadrnA new logo and a breathtakingly beautiful EV concept called the Wildcat prove that Buick is aware that change is needed. Until that happens, the automaker sticks out like a sore thumb in GM's lineup. New EVs like the GMC Hummer and Cadillac Lyriq mean that the tech is there for Buick to expand into the electric segment. As for GM as a whole, it expects supply chain disruptions to delay about 95,000 vehicles to dealers for the remainder of 2022 - this won't help Buick's cause in any way. Loser: Acura/Honda (-50.7% combined)rnWe've grouped Honda together with its luxury arm, Acura, as both brands emerge from a dire second quarter. More so than most other big brands, Honda was thwarted by serious supply issues. In Q2, a total of 215,165 Hondas (-50.6%) and 24,624 Acuras (-51.2%) were sold. Mamadou Diallo from American Honda pointed to "strong turn rates of up to 90 percent" and said that "sales volume is not the best measure of customer demand." Already, Honda has over 6,000 pre-orders for the new HR-V, and the all-new Civic is here. Acura's popular SUVs were also hampered by severe supply issues, with just 1,866 RDXs sold in June (down from 5,638 units in June 2022). Looking AheadrnIt's clear that Honda's product lineup isn't the problem, but that supply issues are. New models like the Honda HR-V and Acura Integra should perform well if Honda can meet demand. Jeff Schuster, president of global forecasting at LMC Automotive, told Automotive News that "we're not seeing any accumulation of inventory at this point" across the industry as a whole, so Honda's troubles may continue well into Q3. Loser: Mini (-45.1%)rnWhile BMW's Q2 sales were at least not hit as hard as the industry average, the same can't be said for Mini. The brand sold 5,131 cars in Q2, down from 9,340 units in Q2 2022. Like many others, the BMW Group's numbers were impacted by limited inventory. Every single Mini saw a drop in sales, but the worst-affected model was the brand's only crossover, the Countryman, with a 68.2% decline and only 1,013 units sold in Q2. This surprising turn is against the grain of the current industry in which crossovers are hot property but was perhaps spurred by the fact that the Countryman isn't affordable, and buyers are reeling from high fuel prices and a rising cost of living. Looking AheadrnAffordability remains a problem for Mini, especially with so many enticing alternatives from Korea. By contrast, although the Cooper Electric is quite attainable for an EV, it is stunted by its severely limited range. Mini has big plans for a future electrified lineup, but right now, the adorable and fun-to-drive Cooper hasn't moved the game on in a significant way and, combined with supply issues, sales could remain low for the rest of the year. Mini, unlike Fiat, will survive, but expect it to remain niche with small sales volumes for now. Other Key Resultsrn- General Motors reclaimed its sales crown from Toyota, but the latter is battling with low inventory. The industry average is 35 days for dealer inventory, but the Japanese marque is languishing on 20 days and has recently cut production further. GM sold 578,507 light vehicles in the US in Q2, down by 15.4%. rn- Toyota Motor North America's Q2 sales slumped by 22.9% to 531,105 cars, including Lexus. The RAV4 remains Toyota's top-selling model for 2022 at 200,885 units, but that in itself is still a downturn of 9.2% compared to this point last year. - Ford's sales may have dipped by 7.9% in the first half of the year, but it had a stellar June with an increase of 31.1%. By contrast, industry sales dipped 11% in June. High demand for the Bronco and F-Series puts Ford in a strong position heading into Q3. As a whole, Ford sold 480,558 light vehicles in Q2 2022, up by 1.8%, bucking the broader industry trend in this quarter. - Mazda was one of the biggest losers in Q2, too, with a decline in sales of 42.8% and 60,535 cars sold. In June, Miata sales were down almost 90% compared to June 2021. Q2 Summary: Sales Not Reflective Of DemandrnParts supplies continue to fluctuate dramatically from month to month. As a result, most automakers were wary of making projections for the rest of the year. "The situation is so fluid right now that on a month, you can say one OEM had more chips than the other. But that's too small of a snapshot to understand how well automakers are getting through the process," said Stephanie Brinley, automotive analyst at S&P Global Mobility. Other analysts suggested that even with rising inflation, the auto industry probably won't take another massive hit as sales are already so low. "Sales are already at recessionary levels, so our vehicle market would be falling off of a curve rather than falling off of a cliff like in a normal recession," said Charlie Chesbrough, senior economist at Cox Automotive. For at least the next quarter, sales numbers will still reflect the industry's challenges rather than a lack of demand for new vehicles. Unfortunately for many consumers, numerous delays are likely to continue as automakers scramble to acquire the parts necessary to build vehicles.

My Fiat 500 is on a lease contract, still under warranty. On way to work this morning, I had a puncture. Managed to get back home. Rang the number on the sun visor (on one of their stickers), number not recognised. Tried again same problem. Tried ringing from the landline, Number nor recognised. This number is supposed to be for breakdown assistance! Not helpful when you need to contact them in an emergency. I rang Fiat at the local dealership where the car came from. Given the same number. Tried again in case I had mis-dialled initially. Same problem. Rang Fiat service again, No one else has had a problem getting through. Very helpful. I do have a puncture repair kit, that Fiat provide, in the boot, which I have never used, so wouldnt feel safe using it, never mind driving the car afterwards to the nearest tyre place. I have now had to ring a mobile tyre company, to try and get the tyre I need, before they can come out to replace it. Lost a days pay from work, plus the cost of repairs which, I am aware I am responsible for. I know the Fiat is Italian, but why dont they have a UK number you can ring from the UK, that you can actually get through on?? I wont be having another Fiat car. This is the 2nd issue Ive had with this car. Not impressed!

recently purchased a pre-registered FIAT 500X in MATT paint from Wilsons Epsom.they sold me GardX paint protection.after application the Paint looked terrible.GardX said - our paint protection is NOT suitable for MATT - never apply.FIAT said 3 year paint warranty maybe void.GardX & Wilsons said the treatment can be easily removed by solvents and orbital polisher - FIAT said NEVER apply any wax, T-cut, polish, treatment or other harmful materials to MATT paint and NEVER use orbital polisher - HAND WASH ONLY or warranty void!I returned the car and got my money back, but that left me with no car for 3 weeks.Very poor GardX knowledge transfer, for sales, application and aftercare...FIAT need to be much clearer about how to care for MATT Paint and Warranty T&Cs

My parents worst decision they ever made was agreeing to a fiat 500 on finance....before we get to the car lets talk about the support, awful..constantly lying and making it hard as possible to get the car paid off...garage lied about disabling stop and start even though it was on before it went in but came out with it off? guessing they have ghosts roaming the garage floors..doesnt matter anyway seeing as stop and start packed up a few months later. The car...awful in general, not only do they look rubbish but the actual engine etc is rubbish, first month of having it we discovered how bad the heater was and car just steamed up 24.7, buttons and controls are something you would expect to find from a plastic toy car not a 6k car...interior turns black after a while and everything just falls to bits..after 3 weeks of owning it and fiat serviced it before selling just for the starter motor to fail and needed a new one...one door alone weighs more than whole car put together. Defiantly not a pleasant time with Fiat and we cant wait to get rid of it. Only good thing is fuel usage is low and it has power when needed unless say youre packed for a holiday and driving there then take my advice and slap some turbos to it because youll be lucky to hit 30.

Fiat 124, my favorite car ever. IAnd Ive owned a bunch--5 BMWs, Subaru BRZ, 2016 Miata, several VWs and multiple Toyotas. I bought my 2017 manual Classica in 2019 with only 3k miles on it. It now has 17k and is a really great driving car. Dont worry about Fiats reputation for unreliability--this car is a joint venture with Miata and has the bulletproof previous generation manual transmission. The heart of the little roadster is the 4 cylinder Fiat Multi-Air engine, which is a proven motor with good performance and reliability. I find no issue with turbo lag, but to be clear, this thing is not a straight line rocket. Its a roadster that is made for canyon carving and is great for spirited driving around town or out in the country too. I really love this car, and it gets great mileage to boot! I am constantly complimented on its looks, and most people have no idea what it is when they pull up beside you. Top down driving is the best!

Fiat Customer Service is a disgrace. My 1 month old spider had a fault on the passenger window that took 5 weeks to resolve. Dealership (Forward Autos - St Helens) cannot be faulted, Fiat Customer Support was non-existent. Fiat Technical were hamstrung because parts were unavailable other than from Mazda (or wait at least a week for shipping!!) I was offered no compensation by Fiat for the delayed resolution but the dealership were so embarrassed by Fiats attitude that they paid 1 month HP for me.

The garage attempting to fix it have no idea what the problem is and I am now requesting a refund. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 makes it an implied term of the contract I have with Thames fiat that goods be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality. As you reject my proposal of a replacement car atno extra cost to me I will have to ask for a refund As you are in breach of contract and Ive owned the vehicle for less than 6 years, I am within my statutory rights to ask for a refund at no further cost to me.if this matter does not get resolved I will be in contact with the ombudsman and taking legal action . Yours sincerely, David

Poor customer service at least on servicing French registered rental cars. Wanted them to check a car with a service engine light on as I had to be driving on the motorway with two small kids. Not only werent they interested, they put the phone down on me. Will ask for a different car next time!

The Mirror sensor on my Fiat 500X wasnt working properly. Had no option but to take it to a Fiat Garage for repair. They (of course !!) had to replace the entire unit. 412.00 later ..... what a complete rip-off - extortion. Wont ever buy a Fiat again !

We have a 10 year old campervan based on a Fiat Ducato chassis. In September the heater matrix unit, which is lodged in the middle of the dashboard broke, meaning steam was coming out of the heating vents. We managed to limp back from France, as we were losing coolant and took it to the local Fiat dealership which we have used since owning the vehicle. To cut a very long story short we took it in on the 09th September 2019 and got it back on the 11th December 2019. The delays were around locating the parts required to fix the problem. We were quoted 1300+vat for the part and 1k labour (the whole dashboard has to come off). After looking at non genuine options which came out at 84.00 (thats not a typo) which wouldnt fit (it took about 4 days for all that to happen) it transpires there was a genuine 460+vat repair kit all along so we went for that option instead but they couldnt get the right connectors. This went back and forth with Fiat Italy (where the spares come from) for weeks. Our end of October half term holiday was approaching and we were due to go to Cornwall in the camper so I escalated to Fiat Customer services for their support.Frankly they were worse than useless, very unsympathetic and couldnt see beyond but your vehicle is out of warranty. I am well aware it is out of warranty and wasnt expecting it fixed for free. My complaint to them was the delay and incompetence finding the right parts that was about to spoil our holiday plans. I asked the customer service lady, if they would be prepared to give me a replacement camper because owing to their incompetence, mine wasnt going to be ready. To add to that, Fiat in Italy refused to open the boxes to check it was the correct part before they ship it so we had to wait for it to arrive in the UK (which can take up to 10 days) then open the box which just added unnecessary delays. So anyway, Fiat customer services informed me they dont do replacement vehicles. ok I didnt think they would but it was worth asking, so I asked if they would reimburse me for the cost of hiring bikes etc. Because we would not be taking the camper to Cornwall we would not have any of our bikes, wetsuits, equipment etc. and would also now have to pay for accommodation, the answer was no. ok, so how about a free service, or some kind of gesture of goodwill to acknowledge the situation we find ourselves in because of Fiat. Er, thats a no as well. ok, so can I speak to your manager please as I dont think that is acceptable, she replied I am the manager, there is no one else you can speak to. ok, so how do I make a complaint, we are the complaints department as well so your complaint would come here. That was Dawn in customer services. Although they work for Fiat UK they are based in Italy which I sadly thought might make it easier to solve our problem. Dawn and the customer services team added no value to this situation at all. Often the garage would call me with an update followed by Dawn a day later with old information. The dealership, Adams Morey in Portsmouth, stepped up to the plate and took a hit on the cost of the parts and labour to recognize the appalling situation. So I have utmost respect for them as this is Fiats incompetence not theirs. Sadly, all this means, along with all the other owners facing similar dissatisfaction with Fiat Customer Service is that I will not by Fiat again. So the cost of a service has just lost them a loyal customer and future sales not just me but others who read this and are undecided what to buy. Thats a great business model Fiat.

My 2 yr old, low miles Fiat 500 broke down with clutch issues, fortunately Fiat Assistance did sort it under the manufacturers warranty (albeit with a few niggles but we are in lockdown). I also initially had problems trying to get through to their Italian based call centre. The car itself feels low quality, I would not buy Fiat again.

Ciao Fiat is one of their logos and I wish I could exercise that option! Let me state I bought one of the first Fiat 500 Electric Cabriolets in the UK, so some may say I was inviting trouble! However Im delighted with the car and I already have another Fiat 500 that Ive also had since new. As a company to deal with they are atrocious. There were small issues to address as one may have expected on a car driven by software. So I was not surprised it was recalled for a software upgrade, but I was bemused there was an 8 week waiting time until it could be upgraded and it was then required for 5 days. The worst aspect however is charging the car, being a top of the range model it comes with a 7KW charger wall box to charge the vehicle FOC which is much faster than the standard 13amp charger. This is all connected to an app on my phone. I was not amused when for the first time I drove the car to within 5% of the battery life and the recharge time to 100% was 34.6 hours. The Wall Box is a complete pain, its not on the UK government approved list for grants, therefore the cost of giving you one FOC is much greater and a lot slower than if you went out and bought a more credible and faster brand! It took 3 months to establish these facts, as getting a response from Fiat is nigh on impossible and when you do! think chocolate Fireguard or ashtray on a bicylcle! I finally decided to trash the free WallBox and get a proper one!It is claimed the car can achieve 200 miles on a full charge but think 150 at best with sensible driving. But dont get me wrong it is a great car to drive.
